Preparing Your Toddler for a New Baby
24 July 2026 · Anna El Ouahabi

A new baby is one of the biggest changes a little one will ever face, and even the most excited big brother or sister can wobble when the reality arrives. The good news is that a little gentle preparation beforehand makes a real difference. Here's what I share with the families I work with.
Talk about it, honestly and often
In the weeks before, weave the baby into everyday chat: the baby will sleep in here, you'll be able to show them your books. Keep it truthful, though. Newborns mostly feed, sleep and cry, so paint that picture rather than promising an instant playmate.
Read books about becoming a big sibling
Stories are how toddlers rehearse big feelings safely. A few favourite new-baby picture books, read again and again, help them make sense of what's coming.
Let them practise caring
Role-play is powerful. Giving your toddler a doll or soft toy of their own to feed, rock and push in a little pram lets them practise gentleness and feel like a capable big sibling, long before the baby arrives.
Protect their world where you can
If you can, make any other big changes (a new bed, starting nursery, moving rooms) well before or well after the baby comes, not right alongside it. One upheaval at a time is plenty.
Plan for the first meeting
Many families find it lovely for the baby to give the toddler a small gift, and for your arms to be free for a proper cuddle when they first meet. Small touches, big reassurance.
Expect some wobbles, and go gently
A little regression, clinginess or big feelings is normal and temporary. Extra one-to-one time, even ten unhurried minutes a day, does more than anything to help a child feel secure.
If you'd like a role-play pram or doll to help your little one practise being a big sibling, you'll find some lovely ones in my shop. And if you'd like a calm plan for the transition, I'm always happy to help, and the first 20-minute call is free.
